Barbara Harford

My experience as a CAIRA Professional Pastoral Supervisor began in the year 2000.

• I was one of the initial group, training in Christchurch a one-year programme with several live-in weekends learning together.
• Our graduation ceremony was held in the Christchurch Cathedral in 2002.
• Over the following 20+ years I have I have offered supervision to Christians from various denominations and a few people with no stated faith.
• My supervisees work in a range of people- helping occupations.
• In recent years I have worked in both face-to-face and Zoom situations.

As a child and young person, I attended the Methodist Church with my family – Growing beyond the family circle I attended an Anglican Church. – I was baptised as an adult in the Anglican denomination.  I was active in churches wherever my work as a teacher was based. I was ordained as Deacon and then Priest in 1999. – I served in two parishes as Associate Priest and then Priest in Charge.

In retirement I hold a PTO (Permission to Officiate), My strengths lie in preaching/teaching and pastoral work.

My supervision work is through the holistic, co-created, reflective-listening process, offering opportunities for silence and prayer as appropriate.

I value the opportunity to walk beside another as I encourage professional growth and confidence in professional performance.

I bring my own cumulative experience in education, ministry as well as chaplaincy with National Hospital Chaplaincy, and Hato Hone St John Ambulance officers and families.

My cultural awareness has been broadened through travel in many parts of the world.          

I was ordained as priest in the Anglican Church, Nelson Diocese, in 1999.

My career in Education:

• As a teacher, I moved through the ranks to become principal of three different city schools in Wellington and Marlborough, then as an Inspector of Schools and in ERO. Retired in 1997.
• I worked with children with various disabilities, including the severely visually disabled.
• In the 1980’s/1990’s I worked closely with the Maori community in Marlborough.
