Celebration & Graduation.
It was a time of joy and thankfulness at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Balclutha on Saturday 23 August 2025 when four people graduated with a full CAIRA licence having completed the 18 months course of theory, reflection and practical aspects.
Clare, Jenny and Himani all live in Murihiku Southland while Natalie can use this option in her new place of ministry in Australia. The Southland graduates can provide pastoral supervision to others involved in ministry across three tikanga and ecumenical settings in both local face to face situations and on the internet across Aotearoa NZ.
Alan and Carron have completed the initial 12 months, with them being able to complete the largely practical aspects in the future if they wish.
The acronym of this particular Pastoral Supervision, CAIRA, is based around the five pillars of Collegiality, Accountability, Identity, Responsibility and Authority.
National Co-ordinator of CAIRA, Rev Marilyn Welch travelled from Auckland to present the certificates and congratulate those involved. She reflected on the value of supervision to all those involved in pastoral work both in the community and in the church. These graduates will join about another 35 people across Aotearoa NZ who are already practising this model of supervision of largely listening, reflecting and being supportive as issues are shared.
The CAIRA website has more details of others who are licensed and available to offer this ministry, based on a negotiated model. Local CAIRA Contacts: Rev Lee Kearon 021 250 1060 & Jenny Campbell 027 351 0180
